Supported Housing

Supported Housing Capital Program

The new Supported Housing Capital Program (SHCP) is designed to make it easier for community organizations to develop and operate housing that meets the needs of vulnerable populations and those who need support to live independently.

Nunavut 3000, the plan to expand Nunavut’s housing continuum by 3,000 units before 2030, includes development of 300 supported housing units in our communities. These units are for Elders, women, children, people with disabilities, those experiencing homelessness and other Nunavummiut who need supported housing.

This program provides eligible organizations and projects with up to $150,000 per unit through a minimum 10-year forgivable loan. Successful community organizations receive:

  • $100,000 for each Single Room Occupancy (SRO) and
  • $150,000 for each self-contained unit.

This program was developed by the Supported Housing Working Group (SHWG), an interdepartmental committee composed of officials from Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC), Family Services, Justice and Health. Projects will be reviewed by the Supported Housing Working Group (SHWG) for feasibility and then submitted to the NHC for consideration.

Interested community organizations are invited to contact NHC with their ideas at SHCapital@nunavuthousing.ca.

Since December 2019, the Centre has supported over 338 projects with funds totalling close to $23 million.

CHTC's contacts and connections across Canada will help the Nunavut Housing Corporation to tap into the knowledge and expertise of national community housing leaders and learn from the best practices of other jurisdictions.
